What is Conflict Coaching?

The truth is that our finest moments are most likely to occur when we are feeling deeply uncomfortable, unhappy, or unfulfilled. For it is only in such moments, propelled by our discomfort, that we are likely to step out of our ruts and start searching for different ways or truer answers.” M. Scott Peck, psychiatrist and author.

Conflict is not always negative, but often our reaction to it is. Conflict itself is useful and valuable. Without it, there would be no scientific advancements, no great works of art or literature, no innovative ideas and solutions. When we use conflict to propel ourselves out of our ruts, we can remove barriers to growth, improve productivity and harmony in the workplace, or renew commitment to personal objectives and interests. Conflict coaching is an effective method for not only resolving conflict, but turning it into a starting point for productive, useful, and necessary change.

So what is conflict coaching?

It’s not mediation; it’s not arbitration; it’s not litigation; and it’s not therapy. Conflict coaching can be done with individuals in crisis or for whole organizations as a way to make the ubiquitous corporate mission, vision, and value statements become more than words on a poster in the lunch room…

Whether working with individuals or whole organizations that are confronting significant change (e.g., restructuring, new mandates, new management, mergers, etc.), a Conflict Coach can help:

  • Clarify key issues and identify goals
  • Create a road map that helps achieve those goals
  • Change habitual behaviors that impede individuals and organizations from resolving issues and/or achieving goals
  • Shift unhelpful reactions into constructive responses
  • Improve language and communication skills for more efficient and constructive interactions
  • Become better problem solvers by developing personal insight, clarity, and different structure for thought processes

There is no way to avoid conflict in the work place, nor would you necessarily want to avoid all conflict. Conflicting viewpoints, and contrasting thought processes can be incredibly valuable. If disputes and heated arguments are getting in the way of progress, however, conflict coaching can help transform discord into opportunity.
